Pedro Martins
Pedro Martins
Brazilian musical prodigy Pedro Martins has been a multi-instrumentalist since a young age. His great master was his father, Oscar Azevedo, who taught him to play when he was only three years old. At age six he could play songs in the
guitar by ear and at eight he learned classic piano with Dib Francis, at Escola de Música de Brasília (EMB), who regarded him as his best pupil. At ten, he joined the band Fator RH with Felipe Viegas, who introduced him to the instrumental music universe. He played rock and choro, and by 18 he was playing guitars (acoustic and electric), piano, bass and drums. His musical influences range from Clube da
Esquina (Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta, etc.), Hermeto Pascoal, to Chick Corea and the Beatles.
From 2009 to 2014, Pedro was part of Ellén Oléria's band, singer who won the first The Voice Brasil and
toured all over the country. In 2012, he took on her the musical production, recording the album “Ellen
Oléria” (Universal Music) as guitarist and musical arranger. On the same year, he also released his first studio album, Dreaming High (Adventure Music), receiving rave reviews both on the web and in high- profile jazz magazines. Brazilian music genius Hamilton de Holanda says “Pedro is the kind of guy who was born ready”!
In 2015 the then 21-year-old Pedro won the Montreux Guitar Competition and that leaded to a fruitful partnership with iconic American guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. He is part of his Caipi Band and has spent the last two years touring the world with him. Rosenwinkel produced Pedro’s second album entitled VOX with an all-star cast of musicians: Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter, Kyle Crane, Frederico Heliodoro,
Antonio Loureiro & Oscar Azevedo. The 13 jazz-inflected Brazilian rock songs on VOX are a result of a two-year long recording, writing, and production process between Martins and Rosenwinkel.
Pedro keeps many musical projects of his own and has just been invited to perform at the prestigious Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival with his musical partner Daniel Santiago. In 2015, the duo recorded the acoustic album “Simbiose”, showing once again that mastery isn't defined by age. He has already performed and recorded with Yaron Herman, David Binney, Jacob Collier, and Genevieve Artadi (Knower), as well as Brazilian jazz greats Hamilton de Holanda, Gabriel Grossi, and Léo Gandelman.
